Dissent and Efficiency: Difficult Trade-Offs for FDA (FDA Matters)
Steven Grossman comments on the FDA's efforts to change its reputation of being hard on agency employees and companies that disagree with it. The FDA should incorporate dissent into the decisionmaking process, tolerate ambiguity of decisions made in the face of dissent and resist the urge to ignore, punish or marginalize dissent. The FDA must continue to work hard to increase trust in the agency's decisionmaking, he says. "It is inevitable that FDA will need to become more open to dissent. Thoughtful structures need to be put in place to channel it and not suppress it," he adds.
